6. Stand-in Baby
- I designed the world’s first, fully articulated, life-like and camera ready posing and training aid, specifically designed for newborn photographers. Which was featured on Sharktank.
While working as an industrial designer at Shapelabs in 2018, I worked on an product that greatly challenged my perception of what the boundaries for innovation and ROI in novel product design could be.
To function as a training aid, the StandInBaby (SIB) required engineered joints that mirrored the range of movement of a real newborn baby. I used newborn x-rays to overlay the foundation of joints. SIB was then manufactured using high quality stainless steel joints and medical grade silicon skin. The joints required tight tolerancing to ensure accuracy and consistency in movement.
This product is used as a photography staging prop, and also as a training aide in studio and maternity ward environments for the safe handling of newborns. SIB is a huge commercial success and has shipped approx 19k units worldwide.
